The story of egg coffee, a family secret

If you ask about where to get real egg coffee in Vietnam, everyone will mention Cafe Giang. According to Nguyen Van Dao, the son of Mr Nguyen Van Giang, it was his father who invented the egg coffee recipe while he worked as a bartender at the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hotel (most famous luxurious 5* hotel in Hanoi) in 1946. At that time, Vietnam was so poor and short of everything due to long time in second world war. Fresh milk was scarce, so he decided to replace milk with whisked egg yolk. It turned out that everyone loved the new taste. The bartender stopped working at the hotel, returned back home and opened the shop for selling egg coffee himself. His brand Cafe Giang was born in that way. Even though there are other shops serve this special coffee with the same recipe; it does not taste the same as Cafe Giang as they keep their own secret. Do try to visit Café Giang whenever you visit Hanoi and see how difference it is between your homemade coffee with this traditional brand.
